¿APOCALIPSIS? ¿QUÉ HACER CON EL CATASTROFISMO?

¿Qué hacer frente al catastrofismo? (Según la RAE “Actitud de quien, exagerando con fines generalmente intimidatorios, denuncia o pronostica gravísimos males.”)

Más allá de las evaluaciones que las noticias puedan merecer, retomamos nuestra reflexión en la Newsletter No. 1 del 01/05/2021 - Prometeo no se rinde:
“Diferentes oráculos de nuevas deidades nos advierten sobre futuras pandemias y otras catástrofes no solo biológicas. Hay un listado de por lo menos una docena de problemas mundiales que pondrían en peligro la supervivencia humana. La nómina incluye desde el impacto de asteroides y la erupción de supervolcanes hasta los malos gobiernos. Se incluyen también una serie de enfermedades para las cuales aun no hay tratamientos ni vacunas. [...] Los vaticinios de eventuales futuras desgracias no hacen más que contribuir al desánimo y la desesperanza. [...] Exhibir temerariamente las posibles desgracias y abandonar todo plan que exceda el día a día, promueve el miedo y obtura el futuro.”

Aunque el miedo no sea zonzo, la ironía, materia prima del humorismo, puede ayudar a ponerlo en su lugar y no permitirle que nos paralice o nos provea de buenas razones para hacer o dejar de hacer algo, o para que algunos se beneficien con nuestro miedo.

Comparto la que despliega el poeta griego Konstantinos Petrou Kavafis, también llamado Constantino Cavafis (Alejandría, 1863-1933).

Esperando a los bárbaros

¿Qué esperamos congregados en el foro?
Es a los bárbaros que hoy llegan.
¿Por qué esta inacción en el Senado?
¿Por qué están ahí sentados sin legislar los Senadores?
Porque hoy llegarán los bárbaros.
¿Qué leyes van a hacer los senadores?
Ya legislarán los bárbaros, cuando lleguen.
¿Por qué nuestro emperador madrugó tanto
y en su trono, a la puerta mayor de la ciudad,
está sentado, solemne y ciñendo su corona?
Porque hoy llegarán los bárbaros.
Y el emperador espera para dar
a su jefe la acogida. Incluso preparó,
para entregárselo, un pergamino. En él
muchos títulos y dignidades hay escritos.
¿Por qué nuestros dos cónsules y pretores salieron
hoy con rojas togas bordadas;
por qué llevan brazaletes con tantas amatistas
y anillos engastados y esmeraldas rutilantes;
por qué empuñan hoy preciosos báculos
en plata y oro magníficamente cincelados?
Porque hoy llegarán los bárbaros;
y espectáculos así deslumbran a los bárbaros.
¿Por qué no acuden, como siempre, los ilustres oradores
a echar sus discursos y decir sus cosas?
Porque hoy llegarán los bárbaros y
les fastidian la elocuencia y los discursos.
¿Por qué empieza de pronto este desconcierto
y confusión? (¡Qué graves se han vuelto los rostros!)
¿Por qué calles y plazas aprisa se vacían
y todos vuelven a casa compungidos?
Porque se hizo de noche y los bárbaros no llegaron.
Algunos han venido de las fronteras
y contado que los bárbaros no existen.
¿Y qué va a ser de nosotros ahora sin bárbaros?
Esta gente, al fin y al cabo, era una solución.

What to do in the face of catastrophism?

Beyond the evaluations that the news may deserve, we return to Newsletter No. 1 of 05/01/2021 - Prometheus does not give up: “Different oracles of new deities warn us about future pandemics and other catastrophes not only biological. There is a list of at least a dozen global problems that would endanger human survival. The list ranges from asteroid impacts and supervolcanoes to bad governments. Also included are a number of diseases for which there are no treatments or vaccines yet. [...] Predictions of eventual future misfortunes only contribute to discouragement and hopelessness. [...] Recklessly displaying possible misfortunes and abandoning any plan that exceeds the day-to-day, promotes fear and blocks the future."

Although fear is not silly, irony, raw material of humor, can help put it in its place and not allow it to paralyze us or provide us with good reasons to do or not do something or for some to benefit from our fear.

Let me share the one displayed by Greek poet Konstantinos Petrou Kavafis, also known as Constantino Cavafis (Alexandria, 1863-1933).

Waiting for the Barbarians

What are we waiting for, assembled in the forum?
The barbarians are due here today.
Why isn't anything happening in the senate?
Why do the senators sit there without legislating?
Because the barbarians are coming today.
What laws can the senators make now?
Once the barbarians are here, they'll do the legislating.
Why did our emperor get up so early,
and why is he sitting at the city's main gate
on his throne, in state, wearing the crown?
Because the barbarians are coming today
and the emperor is waiting to receive their leader.
He has even prepared a scroll to give him,
replete with titles, with imposing names.
Why have our two consuls and praetors come out today
wearing their embroidered, their scarlet togas?
Why have they put on bracelets with so many amethysts,
and rings sparkling with magnificent emeralds?
Why are they carrying elegant canes
beautifully worked in silver and gold?
Because the barbarians are coming today
and things like that dazzle the barbarians.
Why don't our distinguished orators come forward as usual
to make their speeches, say what they have to say?
Because the barbarians are coming today
and they're bored by rhetoric and public speaking.
Why this sudden restlessness, this confusion?
(How serious people's faces have become.)
Why are the streets and squares emptying so rapidly,
everyone going home so lost in thought?
Because night has fallen and the barbarians have not come.
And some who have just returned from the border say
there are no barbarians any longer.
And now, what's going to happen to us without barbarians?
They were, those people, a kind of solution.
